Police in Gran Canaria say they are convinced that the 7-year-old boy who has been missing since Saturday is still on the island.

Yeremi Vargas has not been seen since he failed to return for lunch while playing with friends near his home in Vecindario. The speed with which the family reacted to the disappearance (less than half an hour after he failed to show up) meant that ports and airports were placed on alert almost immediately and the authorities say it is virtually impossible that the boy has been smuggled out of Gran Canaria. As the likelihood of an abduction grows by the hour, locals in Vecindario are to stage a demonstration in the town tonight at 8pm to express their support for the grief-stricken family.
